The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has resigned as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This comes after a legal ruling that challenged her right to occupy the role.
Attorney General's Statement
The nation's top law enforcement official, the Attorney General, confirmed her stepping down on the start of the week. Bondi stated that the appeals court finding made it "untenable" for the official to lead the department effectively.
"Do not interpret adherence to the ruling as defeat," she declared. "My fight will now extend throughout America."
Judicial Challenge
The departure follows closely on a US appeals court determined that she had been unlawfully serving as the top prosecutor. This ruling is could influence many criminal cases in the state.
The appellate judges declared that a interim role that skirted Senate approval ran afoul of the federal law governing appointments.

It was also stated that the former prosecutor will remain at the Department of Justice as a top consultant. They intend to seek further review of the ruling, with hopes of a different outcome.
Writing online, Bondi argued that the court "should not be able to countermand the appointment of attorneys entrusted with executing the fundamental role of the presidency of enforcing the law."

Legal Career
Habba, originally became part of Trump's personal legal team in 2021. She later defended her client in his business records case in 2024, which resulted in his conviction on 34 counts of document fraud.
Prior to assuming the top New Jersey post, the former president had stated he was naming her as his presidential counsellor in a potential future term, describing the lawyer as deeply loyal and a "tireless advocate for justice".
