The people of Israel commemorate second remembrance of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Citizens have gathered across the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault led to in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on that day.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed state commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent delegate involved in the discussions revealed that an late session of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.
The source stated the day's discussions finished without significant progress, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to reduce the disparities between the conflicting groups.

- A permanent truce
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
