The House of Mouse's Real-Life Moana Trailer Looks Remarkably Like a Animated Film
The first trailer for the forthcoming real-life version of Moana has made its debut. Would you believe that, similar to many of Disney's real-life reinterpretations, it appears very much like an animated film and much less like a genuine live-action movie?
Spectacular Imagery Which Retain an Animated Feel
The trailer for the latest version of Moana is certainly spectacular. It features sweeping scenery, gorgeous soundtrack, and well-known personalities. Yet, it still appears similar to an animated film. The over-the-top visuals show characters soaring, water defying gravity, and Maui changing into both a bug and a bird. Each of these effects is accomplished through digital effects and computer animation. Similar to earlier Disney adaptations—such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Jungle Book—the degree of animation is so extensive that it raises the debate: what makes these movies “real-life” other than the promotional label?
Story and Music Fans Adore
Whatever the case, this new Moana seems to be a retelling of the original story, complete with new renditions of the cherished songs. As described in an official synopsis, “Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, travels beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the legendary demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to bring back prosperity to her people.”
New Cast and Returning Faces
At the same time, the teaser features a sample of the updated version on “How Far I’ll Go,” performed by Catherine Laga'aia. The new actor is taking over the part of Moana from Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced the heroine in the original movies.
A key figure who returns is Dwayne Johnson, who will once again be playing Maui. Naturally, that character already resembled Johnson, so casting him in the real-life version appears logical.
Beloved Character Makes an Appearance
Perhaps the most important moment of the preview comes in the final shot. Moana's beloved chicken Hei Hei makes an appearance, screaming at the camera. What better way to introduce the movie’s true icon?
Release Date
The real-life take of Moana arrives in theaters on July 10, 2026.
