The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing several personalities within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you fearful of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given moment. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
