Research Finds Arctic Bear DNA Changes Could Aid Adjustment to Climate Warming
Experts have observed changes in Arctic bear DNA that may assist the animals acclimatize to increasingly warm environments. This investigation is considered to be the first instance where a meaningful connection has been identified between rising temperatures and shifting DNA in a free-ranging mammal species.
Environmental Crisis Threatens Arctic Bear Future
Climate breakdown is jeopardizing the existence of polar bears. Projections indicate that a large portion of them may be lost by 2050 as their icy environment melts and the climate becomes warmer.

The climate in the northern area are more frigid and more stable, while in the south-east there is a much warmer and less icy area, with sharp weather swings.

Food Source Variations and Key Genomic Regions
The study noted some intriguing DNA changes, such as in regions connected to lipid metabolism, that might aid Arctic bears cope when food is scarce. Bears in hotter areas had more rough, plant-based food intake in contrast to the blubber-focused nutrition of northern bears, and the DNA of these specific animals appeared to be adjusting to this change.
Godden stated: “Scientists found several key genomic regions where these jumping genes were highly active, with some located in the protein-coding regions of the DNA, implying that the animals are undergoing rapid, fundamental DNA modifications as they respond to their vanishing icy environment.”
Further Study and Broader Impact
The next step will be to examine different Arctic bear groups, of which there are 20 around the world, to see if similar modifications are occurring to their DNA.
This study might aid conserve the animals from disappearance. However, the scientists emphasized that it was crucial to halt climate change from increasing by cutting the consumption of coal, oil, and gas.
“We cannot be complacent, this provides some optimism but is not a sign that polar bears are at any reduced threat of extinction. It remains crucial to be pursuing all measures we can to decrease greenhouse gas output and decelerate temperature increases,” summarized Godden.
