Netanyahu to Meet President Donald Trump in US Amidst Fears of Israel's Regional Military Actions

The Israeli premier is due to sit down with the US president at the Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Monday evening. This takes place as anxieties grow that Israel could launch new offensives against neighboring adversaries, possibly sending the Middle East further into turmoil.

The Israeli leader departed Israel on Sunday, marking his fifth meeting to see Trump in the United States this year.

Truce in Gaza and Upcoming Challenges

A top priority will be the ceasefire in Gaza, which in October stopped the lengthy two-year war. While the terms for an opening period have been for the most part fulfilled, with Israeli forces withdrawing to new positions and Hamas releasing the surviving and nearly all of the deceased hostages, significant challenges lie ahead for the execution of the second phase of the US-brokered 20-point plan.

There are further concerns that Israel will launch new strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, breaking a ceasefire put in place more than a year ago, or against Iran, which it alleges of accelerating the manufacture of ballistic missiles in recent months.

“Phase 1 is basically over, there’s one remaining Israeli deceased hostage which [Hamas] are having difficulty finding,” noted an analyst involved in back-channel talks.

Both sides blame one another of ceasefire violations. In recent weeks, downpours and chilly weather have worsened the misery in Gaza, where most housing and infrastructure have been heavily damaged or leveled.

The war was sparked by a sudden assault by Hamas in southern Israel in 2023, in which 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and 250 others taken hostage.

Subsequent Phases and Diplomatic Tensions

Under the subsequent phases of the US proposal, an provisional government made up of independent Palestinian experts is to govern the Palestinian territory instead of Hamas. An international stabilisation force of thousands of troops is to be deployed.

Meanwhile, efforts to secure a defence pact between Israel and Syria have failed to make significant progress and will also be a topic at Mar-a-Lago. Israeli officials have also called for more effective efforts to disarm Hezbollah.

Netanyahu is confronted with an election within 10 months, and the impending polls will influence his agenda. “Everything is connected to [his] political survival,” an analyst said.

Surveys suggest Netanyahu’s current coalition would struggle to form a government if elections were held now. Many voters are frustrated over the lapses that led to the 2023 Hamas raid, policies concerning military service exemptions, and a series of scandals.

A tight alliance with Trump would bolster Netanyahu’s appeal among floating voters and his base. This implies any public disagreement between the two leaders is extremely unlikely, analysts said.

Netanyahu is expected to seek to convince Trump of the need for Israel to maintain a technological superiority over potential regional enemies. Many Israeli officials were concerned by earlier US comments regarding advanced weapons sales to other regional states.
