Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after former President Donald Trump accused a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be arrested and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The video footage, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who in the past served in military or defense roles.
"Like us, you all swore an oath to safeguard and support this founding document," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from within our own country. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to follow commands that violate the law or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Furious Response
The video message reportedly provoke a furious reply from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he wrote: "This represents really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Respond
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader issued a unified declaration condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all served our nation with exceptional national pride and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's appalling and risky calls for execution against congressional representatives, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also said that they had been in contact with protective services "to ensure the protection of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical digital publications and retract his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the statement stated.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The officials who appeared in the video also released a statement.
"We are ex-military personnel and national security professionals who value this country and swore an vow to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge continues forever, and we plan to honor it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the former president views it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the constitution and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "All citizens must unite and condemn the former president's requests for our death and partisan aggression. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Further Political Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."
The Conservative official supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the government advising troops to disobey orders, I think that's historic in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly informed the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to analyze the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a reporter, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the representative stated. "There are current representatives of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to ignore the executive's lawful orders."
She stated: "The purity of our defense system relies on the command structure, and if that system is broken, it can cause casualties, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
